Frequently Asked Questions

Who is Jane Austen?

Jane Austen was a writer from the early 19th century--the Regency Period to be precise. She completed six novels: Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, Emma, Northanger Abbey, and Persuasion.

Do I have to belong to JASNA to attend Reading Group meetings or other events?

No you do not need to be a memeber to attend anything unless the description specifically says "Members Only." Both of our Reading Groups are always free and open to the public, and we rarely do events that exclude the public. The only difference usually is the cost to attend events that we charge for.

What is your cancellation/refund policy?

**Please note that this is our general policy. For the cancellation/refund policy for a specific event, please see the event details in case it is different.

A refund, minus any costs already incurred by JASNA Central and Western Ohio on your behalf, will be issued for cancellations received at least seven (7) calendar days prior to the event.  No refunds will be issued for cancellations received after the deadline.  The Registration coordinator must be notified via e-mail or text for cancellations: (gasiormaryann@yahoo.com) or 937-434-5992.

We are happy to send a contribution acknowledgement letter for tax declaration purposes if you would like your non-refunded and unused registration fee to become a charitable contribution to JASNA Central and Western Ohio. Please contact JASNA Central and Western Ohio Treasurer at (mccoyjm@sbcglobal.net) in addition to the Registration coordinator to request a contribution acknowledgement.

What if an event is cancelled? How will I learn about that?

Thankfully this does not happen too often, but this is Ohio, so weather or other circumstances could cause us to cancel an event. If that happens, we will likely let you know through the Event and Home pages here on our site, as well as through our Facebook page and the Facebook event page for the specific event (if there is one). You can also try contacting someone on the Executive Committee (see the newsletters for contact information).

What is the benefit of becoming a member?

There are many great benefits of belonging to JASNA. We have a lending library with books, movies, and other materials available upon request to our members (click to view the Library Page). You also receive a discounted rate to our events, and access to JASNA National's resources and benefits (click here to see those benefits).

Wow, that all sounds great! How do I become a member of JASNA Central and Western Ohio?

You can become a member by filling out the JASNA online form here

What if I am one of the few people who does not like the Colin Firth Pride &Prejudice adaptation?

Well...you might want to be discreet about that opinion, but we know such people exist and welcome them despite what many Janeites would see as their questionable taste. As long as you enjoy Austen and passionate opinions, you will be fine.

But maybe be careful about this particular topic. Colin Firth is a hot topic for us Janeites ☺
